As M.A.K Halliday (1985) in his functional grammar theory said, “Different language to
different people” which means that different people use and want different
things, it also happens in the case of happiness. The nature of what makes
people happy can be different. It depends on the people or a group of certain
people who run it. People may feel happy to many reasons of their own. Some may
feel happy when they have much money. Others may feel happy when they can go
travel around to some places. But sometimes money, family, friends are not
really the one to make them happy. Thus,
the writer tries to show different side of what makes different people happy.
A
student of school has different factors of what makes her happy than a student
of a university. Ewira, a student of the
second year of the senior high school says, “I will be very happy if I can be
the first champion in my school.” She thinks that if this happens she will be
very happy then. She will not be happy
herself but also the family of her. Besides, there is also one thing that makes
her happy namely, the time when the teacher she dislikes is absent. It sounds
weird but for the students in her ages it is normally accepted.
Meanwhile
a university student feels happy on some things. Lie, a 20 years old student
says that she will be very happy when she can finish her study with the highest
GPA. She thinks that if she gets this
one, she will be very happy. By that way she feels, she can see the result of
her struggle in her study. In addition, she hopes that her scholarship will
soon be realized. If it is realized, she can pay her tuition without asking
from her parents. She always tries to do part time job and looking for the
scholarships to support from his studies. She does this because she really
feels happy when she can stand alone without burdening her parents. Lastly, as
an adolescent she hopes that he will have someone special for her to care and
protect her. These make her happy.
For
another place of live what makes people happy is different. A group of certain
people who live in the in the village and in the city will show the contrast
different. They who live in the village feel happy when the harvest time is
coming. They will then invite their neighbor to come together to their village
to yield. In the field they will work together and eat together. They will also
sing the traditional songs together. After harvesting they will make the party
of celebration and feast together. Besides, they are very close one each other
that they are accustomed to go to one and another houses to talk. They will
also make the Christmas celebration every year by performing the youngest to
the oldest. These really make them happy. It is very happy to see them smiling
and laughing when they do these things together.
In
the city, people feel happy when they have no contact to the people besides
them. They are happy to make the fence all around their houses to make the
limitation to their neighbor. It is done to avoid the contact. Also people in
the city are very happy when they are greater than their friend. Competition
becomes one important thing for them. They are running and running to be the
richer in their area. Contrastingly, city men who live under the bridge also have
the different factor. They will be very happy when there’s no flood in the
river. They will usually find flood in the rainy time. So when there is no
rain, they will sleep soundly in the night without worries. They also feel
happy when they get the help from the government. So even though they live
together in city, they have different factors of what make them happy.
Some
factors also determine the people feel happy. Someone who has got job is
different with them who haven’t got yet. He, who has got the job, will feel
very happy when he gets the higher promotion in his job. This promotion will
make them get the higher salary and the higher status on their social life.
They also will be able to do many things with the higher salary they have. They
wish so that their work runs well. Besides they may want another one beside
this it. They love go shopping and traveling. By doing them, they feel relax
and comfortable.
For
a looker what makes her happy is getting a job. She wants to get a permanent
job. She wants to be paid properly in her job. She feels that getting a job in
this time will make her very happy. She thinks that finding a job really a
burden now. She wants a job which meets her qualification. This fact does not
happen only to her, but to all the lookers in the position like her. They
really wish this so much without hoping another thing. They want it is done
without waiting too long. So in the end when they get the proper job they will
end their suffering.
For
parents, what makes them happy is simple. All the parents’ happiness in this
big world is put upon their children. They want so that their children grow
healthy. They wish their children are away from all kinds of diseases, dangers
and all sorts of things which harm their children. They will be very happy when
they can see their children smile and laugh. They send them to school, private
course, dancing and singing course with one definite goal, seeing them success.
They also never let them lack in everything they wish. It looks very great when
a child asks her mom, “Mom, I want money to buy ice cream!’ and she will
answer, “I don’t have money dear!”. It is impossible that she has no money at
all. But then when the child asks her mom, “Mom, I want millions money to buy
some new books.” Then the mother will directly give it without thinking twice.
That sounds funny, but that’s parents’ happiness.
For
sellers in the market especially traditional market, they will feel happy when
they can sell their things. They feel happy when many people buy their things.
They feel that happiness come when everyday they can sell their things without
many problems. It can be rain or very hot sunshine. When the rain comes the
buyer will not come then to buy. They will also be in a big trouble to get the
shelter for them and their things. When it is a very hot sunshine, they will be
also in a big trouble for they have to stay under the sunshine all the day
long. They have the very simple thing in making them happy.
As
the closing of what makes people happy, a fact shows that a lovers as the last
object has the very usual things to make them happy. They always want together
with their couple. They want to spend their time together all the time. “Beside
you, I want nothing.” This statement is a very usual word to be stated in their
term. They also think that the entire problem can be solved when they are
together. It sounds overly but they convince me that it is really effective
when you are drifted in. They say to me that love really changes their life. I
think I want to try to be in this one. Just kidding
As
stated above, I know then that the factors of what make people happy are not
always the same. The nature of what makes them happy is different based on
their life. Money is only a small part and a media to their happiness. People
will surely feel happy when they get what they really wish. In my opinion it is
really well accepted because people have different lifestyle. To my own self, I
will be very happy if all the people in my essay get what they wish and become
very happy. In this world there are still many kinds of the people and their
happiness. But only, let them get their happiness. Then, when they have their
happiness the world will full of smile.
